Kris Vijay (Krishnaswami Vijayaraghavan, MD, MS, FACC, FACP, FNLA, FHFSA) is the Medical Director of the Institute of Congestive Heart Failure at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital and Abrazo Health Network in Arizona. He is a Non-invasive Cardiologist, a trained endocrinologist, clinical lipidologist, an ardent researcher and a Heart Failure specialist. Dr. Vijay earned his medical degree from Kasturba Medical College, University of Mysore, India. He completed postgraduate training in medicine in Bombay, India; Oxford, United Kingdom; and Rochester, New York, and has completed fellowships in endocrinology and diabetes at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, and in cardiology at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix. He also holds a Master’s degree in clinical research design and statistical analysis from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. Dr. Vijay serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of Arizona, Phoenix and as an adjunct Professor of Medicine at Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM).
He is currently the Director of Clinical Research for Abrazo Internal Medicine Residency Program. He has been in clinical practice for more than 40 years since Medical School and in Arizona for more than 30 years. Dr. Vijay is a past Governor of the American College of Cardiology, Arizona Chapter, Past President of the National Lipid Association, South West Chapter, immediate past Executive Council Chair of National Lipid Association, a founding member and past President of the Cardio Renal Society of America and current President of the TWINEPIDEMIC, Inc., a nonprofit organization addressing Diabetes and Heart disease among Ethnic Communities all over the world. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, National Lipid association and Heart Failure Society of America. Dr. Vijay was named a fellow of the prestigious Heart Failure Society of America based on his professional success, outstanding credentials, achievements and contributions to heart failure clinical practice, research, publications, and educational expertise. He is a member of the clinical cardiology council as well as council for Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology at American Heart Association, a member of Prevention and Cardio-metabolic committee at American College of Cardiology and an Executive Board member of the National Lipid Association.
He is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. Dr. Vijay has participated in more than 180 clinical trials and his research is focused on such disorders as congestive heart failure, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, coronary artery disease, plaque regression, Atrial Fibrillation, peripheral vascular disease, and diabetes/metabolic syndrome. He has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Vijay is a founding member of the Arizona Managed Care Quality Enhancement Program (AMCQEP), 1992, and received the Governor’s award from Health Services Advisory Group (HSAG), October 2002, an innovation award through the Center for Health Innovation and Clinical Trial (CHI&CT) at Arizona State University from the President of Arizona State University in 2010 and the Jerome Markowitz award for a distinguished career from South Asian Society of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis in 2013. He was one of the three nominees of Healthcare Heroes award for Phoenix Business Journal towards Lifetime achievement in 2017.He received a Lifetime achievement award from American College of Cardiology, Arizona Chapter in 2018. He was recognized as one of the AZ TOP DOCS in 2020.
He has presented at numerous national and International meetings on diabetes and heart disease. His professional activities also include serving on Editorial Boards of medical journals, reviewing, and contributing towards landmark guidelines and policy statements as well as serving on many important advisory boards dealing with Quality initiatives of national organizations. Dr. Vijay takes a holistic view of heart failure, using a variety of treatment options along with motivating, inspiring and coaching to encourage patients to modify their lifestyles. His mission has been in prevention of risk factors of heart disease and diabetes at primordial, primary, secondary, and tertiary care levels. Prevention of Heart Failure has been his main goal. In addition to spending countless hours caring for patients, he has dedicated himself to improving medical education, research, and the overall quality of care. His special brand of care is making a positive and measurable difference in keeping patients healthy, and importantly, out of the hospital. He is actively involved in digital technology, drug and device development.
He is an advisor for many biotech companies. He is a Medical Sherpa, volunteering his services to serve the underserved in attempts to mitigate diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease around the world through his nonprofit organization, Twinepidemic, Inc. He is also a Needs Ambassador for a large multinational nonprofit organization, Project C.U.R.E, providing services for the Dalai Lama Heart Foundation, in Ladakh, India, in the Himalayas. He lives with his wife in Phoenix Arizona. They have 2 sons, also living and working in Phoenix, AZ. His parents-in-law have been living with them for the last 28 years.
